This Is GWAR Director Scott Barber On Making A Documentarian’s Dream [Exclusive Interview]

Do you suppose their early followers had been hip to the satire?

I believe their followers have all the time recognized that. Their hardcore followers have all the time recognized that there is component of satire. I believe even lots of people which might be into rock and roll do not essentially know that there’s that. I am not knocking these bands, however bands like Slipknot or ICP, they’re a bit of totally different than that.

They all the time say, “We’re not a band that wears costumes.” As a result of the folks that make the costumes are a part of the band. They’re an artwork collective. Half of what you think about GWAR is just not musicians. There’s comedian guide artists. There’s the sculptors, welders. All of these individuals are members of GWAR, whether or not you play an instrument or not. So they are not fairly the identical as these different bands. It is like, “We’re a band that simply has any individual make costumes for us, and we put on them.” They’re an artist collective.

Additionally, some individuals are like, “Oh, it is that robust man stuff. I am not into that robust man, heavy metallic.” It is like, “That is not what it’s. It isn’t that.” It is hilarious, really.

It is the alternative of that, that is what shocked me. They’re artsy VCU youngsters.

Yeah, that is what they’re. That was one factor, too, that we needed to indicate. I do not suppose lots of people perceive that GWAR has all the time been cool in a heavy metallic method, however they’re really cool in a hipster method, too. Such as you mentioned, they’re all artwork college students. They had been into artwork, they usually had been nerds.

Chuck Varga, the Sexecutioner, mentioned, “When folks would meet me, they anticipated me to seem like Glenn Danzig or Peter Steele from Kind O Damaging.” And so they’re like, “You are only a regular-looking dude? That is bizarre.” It is like, “Yeah, I’m. I put on this costume with this bizarre man that chops folks’s heads off. I am simply an artist that likes sculpting issues.”

Any tales you really liked you did not have time to incorporate within the doc?

Lots, as a result of it is 40 years. Actually, technically, GWAR began in ’83, after which by ’85, they had been GWAR. After which they put out their first report, “Hell-O,” shortly thereafter. In order that’s a very long time. A very long time with folks residing their life to the max. So yeah, there are going to be a whole lot of tales that you may’t match into slightly below two hours.

I believe that our crew, not myself, however our editor, Casey Pinkston, and our producers, everybody needed 90 minutes. And we’re like, “There’s simply no method it will be 90 minutes. It may’t.” And after we inform folks that is virtually two hours, they’re like, “Oh, God. Two hours. There isn’t any method.”

It flies by.

I really like listening to that. As a result of there’s a lot stuff that occurs. Individuals die. Individuals get shot. They make two films. They obtained nominated for a Grammy. They construct all these things. And likewise, there’s simply extra characters than in a daily band. A daily band has, what, 4 or 5 folks? There are 10, 15 folks which might be within the doc, and that is not even practically all of the folks which were in GWAR. So yeah, there’s lots that I want we may have put in there. Hopefully, sometime we will put it out in a distinct capability.

Plus, these are characters you wish to spend extra time with.

That was one other factor: It’s important to get to know these guys. All of them. It’s important to a minimum of really feel like them a bit of bit so that you can actually care. It is one factor once you hear about any individual going by way of tragedy. It is one other factor when it is any individual that you recognize went by way of tragedy. That is far more unhappy. If it is your pal’s mom who handed away versus you see on the information any individual handed away. They’re each unhappy, however one hits you a large number in a different way.

We had been like, “If we edit it shorter, it is really going to really feel longer.” The Pete Lee story, he is simply the sweetest. We interview him, and he is the primary man that is not from Richmond. He is from Texas. So at that time, the story will get larger. It isn’t a Richmond band anymore. Now, they’re nationwide.

Pete Lee is available in, and in my view, you fall in love with him. He is obtained that Texas accent, and he is identical to, “I went down there, and I had a bag of weed in my automotive. I mentioned, ‘I will audition. I will be your new guitar participant.'” He’s simply this fascinating man. After which once you see what occurs to him, you are like, “Oh man. Not that man. That man is so candy. Why is that this taking place to him?”

Or Michael Derks. One thing occurs to him in a while within the doc. And you are like, “No, not Michael Derks. He is the sweetest man I’ve ever met.” We knew that you just wanted to know that they had been candy, lovely folks to care about them in a while.

“That is GWAR” is now out there on VOD, Digital, DVD, and Blu-ray, and it is presently streaming on Shudder.
